I'm affraid I can't tell you very much about Finland and the habits of the
Finish people, because my correspondent let me down in some way. She only has sent me an e-mail twice, one at the beginning of the project and one
about three weeks ago to report she has changed school and isn't in the project
anymore.
I exspected it to be different, but it turned out this way and I really regret it. I was full enthousiasm when we started, but when you get no
response it's not easy to remain enthousiastic.
I only know very little of her, I know she's about sixteen or seventeen years old and that she's engaged. She has to work very hard at home and
doesn't have much time left to study. In some way I felt sorry for her, it seemd to me her parents were not rich at all, but I don't know for
sure. They didn't have a computer at home, so she had to send her e-mails at
school. She hasn't sent me a picture either, but I know she was not able to do
that.
Well, I hope the students next year will have more luck with their
e-mailfriend, I can't blame mine for not answering me, but I think the Finish teacher should be more strickt about sending the obliged
e-mails, because Belgian students also have to spend some of their time on writing
e-mails and it's much nicer if you get response, I can assure you that.
I think it's a very good idea and some of the students really kept in touch
with their Finish penmate, and although I didn't have much luck with mine, I
learned a lot of English by computer and in the lessons.
yours truly,
Jana Massart
